Most new boat owners underestimate just how important boat detailing is. Just because your boat is new doesn’t mean you should skip thorough care and cleaning. At Foster’s Yacht Services, we always encourage people to keep their boats well maintained.

Importance of Detailing

Detailing is a part of essential boat maintenance. Your new boat wouldn’t continue to look shiny without it. When you take your boat out to the sea, it’s exposed to several damaging elements. The water is salty and can be corrosive, the sun’s UV rays can damage the coat, and corals or stones can damage the hull. All these forces can steadily damage your boat.

Regular yacht service will protect your boat and extend its life. Here’s how the entire detailing process is carried out.

Cleaning and Rinsing – The first step is to clean the boat and remove the surface layer of dirt and grime. Every time your boat makes a trip to the sea, it picks up a little more grime. If you allow it to build up, it can damage the boat. If your boat sees regular use, it’s a good idea to wash it once a month. You just need clean water. You can use a pressure washer or a normal hose pipe to rinse the boat from top to bottom. That would take care of the first layer.
Deep Cleaning – After you’ve rinsed, you need to take care of the more stubborn stains. You’ll need boat soap for this. Normal detergent can harm the coating and not be as effective as boat soap. You’ll also need a bucket and a brush, along with a piece of cloth to clean the boat.
Tackle one section at a time, instead of trying to apply soap on the entire boat before rinsing it off. If you allow the soap to dry on the surface, it’ll damage the coating and leave behind ugly stains. Just soap small sections of the boat and instantly rise it off the moment the grime is removed.

Buffing – You can use your hand or a rotary buffer to accomplish this task. Buffing will take care of the stains that soap couldn’t remove. That usually happens when you don’t clean your boat effectively or regularly. After you’ve soaped your boat, if you still find some grime on the surface, you should buff it.
Waxing – When you buff, you’ll remove the shiny coat of your yacht. This is where you might want to call in professional yacht service. Waxing a yacht isn’t easy and requires a lot of elbow grease. You’ll have to wax on and wax off one section after another until your yacht is gleaming.
